Day 10

  • how the placement has further inspired them to study the subject
  • what the placement has taught them about the subject that they have applied to study (this could be specific knowledge or more general insight)
  • how the placement has helped to demonstrate in practice what they have learnt previously (or alternatively how the placement has made them question what has previously been learnt!)
  • how the placement has further inspired them to seek a long-term career within the subject
  • how their abilities or previous experience fit with the demands of a career related to the subject.

Event Design.

Today I met with Symeon who is the design manager at live events. He explained that at the moment to make the process easier they are trying to change the tours in to one big world tour but still keeping it same countries. One of these reasons is that the UK and IRE poker tour is abbreviated to UKIPT and people confuse it with politics party UKIP.

It would seem that they use a lot of the same templates and don't really get to be visually creative. In this type of job I would like to use my visual creativity  more when it comes to event design.

Symeon explained there are 40/50/60 events a year and 4-5 years ago the layout of events where very different and that the design teams didn't get a lot of say in how the events where laid out. Since then they have completely levelled up on design and created spaces that excel in ambience. Digital seems to replace a lot of the old banner styles. Not only grander but cost effective. You don't have to re print all the time. Although cost effective, it is not always possible to ship equipment from one event to the other. This is due to restrictions amongst other reasons.

Looking at older events you could see from a design point of view, logos where used incorrectly and spacial awareness was not taken into consideration. They also incorporate more subtle branding in some places. This was evident at my trip to the hippodrome on the seats.

I am currently awaiting pictures to show here on my diary.

Before the events happen, they explained the necessary planning process. Using visualisations, floor plans and superimposed images on photoshop. This helps vision what looks good and try out new ideas. Symeon showed me a collateral list that his team can refer to, I think this is a brilliant way to keep everyone in the loop on whats done, what they need to do personally and what hasn't been done.  Looking at the events I wondered why some were different. Symeon explained there are exemptions in design. For example, the PCA (Poker Carriban Adventure) is their flagship tour, something a little different and fun to the others. The exception also goes to the poker tournament hosts in Macau and Manilla where they find black an unlucky colour so they have to use different colours. Black is a vital colour in poker stars branding code.

One of their ideas was to light the poker tables to add effect for the players but they found that after the players were up for long periods of time playing and having the lights low with just poker table lights would make them sleepier quicker. The other thing they touch on is the TV Broadcast where they design the TV set and also brief the online motion graphics team on what they want as the back screen.

The team also came up with a new trophy design which they believe is a massive step from the previous one.
You will notice more than one trophy here. They decided that people should be able to have more opputunites to bring home a trophy even if they don't specifically win the main one. I totally agree with this concept and told the team that the designs were great.

I later met with James who is specifically working on PCA's 2016 tour and does the graphics and designs for t shirts and cards. I asked why and he explained that people want to see change when they come back and don't see the same keepsakes.

Process of Work and PokerStars basic info for newcomers

FREELANCER STUDIO INFO: ONLINE
Welcome to PokerStars. This information sheet is designed to give you a little head-start on who we are and the way we work here in the PokerStars design studio. This isn’t by any means comprehensive, so please do not be afraid to ask questions. We hope it will help you in understanding working practices here in the studio, along with some basic PokerStars brand guidelines, in order to produce consistent results.
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
In a rather large nutshell, we are the world’s largest online poker site – both play money and real money.
In addition to this, we stage live event tournaments worldwide and sponsor many professional poker players (Poker Pro’s) from all over the world.
We produce all online graphics for the PokerStars websites, as well as designs of the sites themselves. Because we are an international company, most graphics we produce usually have to be reproduced in multiple languages and multiple sizes.
We have two parts to the web site - the main PokerStars.com site which is for real money players and the PokerStars.net site for the ‘play-money’ (fake cash) players. Although these are the umbrella sites, we have localised sites too i.e. PokerStars.co.uk PokerStars.it PokerStars.fr etc...
OUR LOGOS
Admittedly we have a vast amount of logos – and the list is growing – but when it comes to our main PokerStars logo, there are 3 basic types:
Inline:
Stacked v1 with spade inside

Stacked v2 with spade outside
We usually use the negative (white) version of the logo on dark/black backgrounds, or place it within a black lozenge if it needs to appear on a white background.
In addition to this (and according to the country and their legal restrictions), there are variations on both the suffix (.com, .net, .de, .fr etc) and the size and colour of the suffix (i.e. small and grey or same size and white). The logo to be used should be specified in the brief.
OUR FONTS
Basic PokerStars Fonts
We use Utah Condensed for most of our online work. Headings/sub-headings usually 67 Bold Condensed and body copy is usually 57 Condensed using
a mixture of upper and lower case letters. Any legal lines or hyperlinks we use ‘
Verdana’. For simplified Chinese we use Hei Adobe Heiti Std. For font management, we use Apple’s Font Book.
Occasionally, we use fonts from the Eurostile family, but this is rare and usually only when producing artwork to do with our regional tours and logos. Please ask if you are unsure which font to use.
OUR COLOURS
We use a rich black with a subtle gradient to dark grey giving depth and light. Black: R:0 G:0 B:0
Red: R:219 G:0 B:0
Grey: R:130 G:133 B:136
BRIEFING AND APPROVALS
1. Brief is received from stakeholder to Studio inbox.
2. Studio (Fiona or Gem) assign a project number and create the project in traffic and schedule in your calendar. You will then receive a new email with the project number in the subject line with the deadline and brief attached.
3. Review on the screen with Simon in the studio then forward to Galina for creative feedback and discuss without cc’ing the studio. Once you have her approval please forward the whole email chain to studio including artwork, which we will then send on to the stakeholder for approval.
4. Amends from the stakeholder will come back to you from Studio@.
CORRECT FILE NAMING
Obviously this will vary greatly depending on what you’re working on, but there are a few basic things you need to include:

SERVERS – WHERE TO KEEP YOUR WORK
We keep all our design work and logos on the server called DESIGN. This can be located by selecting ‘Connect to Server’ within the Finders GO menu and typing in afp://lonfs04, pressing ‘Connect’ then selecting ‘Design’ from the server menu that appears. If this does not appear on your desktop, be sure
to have ‘Hard Disks’ and ‘Connected Servers’ options turned on in the Finder Preferences.
Any work on your desktop MUST be copied to the server each night before leaving as the Mac work stations are not backed up over night.

Wallpaper Design Research and Branded Merch Ideas

  • how the placement has further inspired them to study the subject
  • what the placement has taught them about the subject that they have applied to study (this could be specific knowledge or more general insight)
  • how the placement has helped to demonstrate in practice what they have learnt previously (or alternatively how the placement has made them question what has previously been learnt!)
  • how the placement has further inspired them to seek a long-term career within the subject
  • how their abilities or previous experience fit with the demands of a career related to the subject.

As part of today the print media side have asked me to research some ideas for pokerstars.com wallpaper that will be made available by the VIP club store. I also continued to brainstorm ideas for PokerStars branded merchandise.

here are the results of my research.

I also suggested motion graphics as something a little different from static. Using footage from shutter stock and tumblr as examples.

Here are some examples of branded merchandise I designed on adobe photoshop.

Day 9 - Online Graphics and Motion Graphics Team.

AM:

Today I met with Steve Little who took me through the basic process of the online graphics team.
Below is an example of the graphics they produce for online promotions.

Using celebrities with a huge fan base extends the reach of promotions at a massive scale. Nevertheless Simon explains this comes at a high cost to sponsor them, regardless worth it.

The team deal with global CRM promotion, which encourages people to spend money online and social media graphics too. CRM stands for customer response management. There is an annual cycle of promotions but they also create new ones by yearly events e.g World Cup or Olympics.

The team have 60 different template sizes to work with including ones for the

  • Homepage banner
  • Landing page banner
  • Thumbnails
  • 8 x different mobile sizes
  • The Client (the gaming platform) has different sized graphics with in
  • Social media graphics (Facebook, twitter, insta, etc)
With all these graphics they need to be translated into 28 different languages. Simon explains at PokerStars they are still a bit behind with the operation side of this and using HTML would make the execution easier. Now they still need to go through the long process of
  1. Execution
  2. Content
  3. Execution
  4. Online Graphics
  5. Execution
  6. Translation to different languages

They also say, its not often they get to have the visual process but sometimes they do.

Overall I enjoyed my time with Simon, he was very in depth with the pros and cons of working in the online graphics side of things

I have taken away with me the thought that the creation of the graphics on adobe is not something I can see my self, nevertheless I believe directing the process is something I'll be good at.

                          PM:
Digital Animation was my next step. I was absolutely stunned by the amazing pieces of work the team come out with.

Neal Pleasance described his team as
  • 3 x on online advertising/apps/banners and coding
  • 3 x on 3D motion graphics and TV Live events.
I then went on to ask about what is the general outline of the teams work and their place at pokerstars. I was told that any motion graphic goes to his department this also includes webcasts. He stated that they started of as GIFS and FLASH banners but FLASH cannot be seen on all devices as we know. Its now 90% moved over to HTML5, which he said was 'inferior' to flash but thats the way it has to work in order for the animations to be visible on all platforms. They also deal with Facebook and Instagram animations too.

For the live events the team come up with animations for the screens, tv backdrop, micro tiles, live event app, countdown to registration notices, table planners (so staff can keep tabs on who is where and shift tables about) and they do the coding swell for the above.

Neal then showed me a showreel of previous work which outstounded me. I was beyond impressed with the work they output. More impressively the work is never from a template and anything from water to chips are done from scratch using 4D software.

Social Media Project

  • how the placement has helped to demonstrate in practice what they have learnt previously (or alternatively how the placement has made them question what has previously been learnt!)

Social Media Project

PokeStars.com

Instagram
§     Incorporating different sports into the page (#Wimbledon #golf)
§     Using interesting card towers (could use #cardtower and possibly some more interesting structures using cards. This can go into all platforms for example ‘Send us in your card tower [best one wins] competition’)
§     Using beautiful poker players attracting a different crowed (could use #beautifulwomen)
§     Tattoos (Tattoos are a very popular search at the moment so could feature more of these by using #tattoos #bodyart #pokertattoo. This can go into all platforms for example ‘Send us your poker tattoo [best one wins] competition’)
§     Using national days like Fathers Day reaches out all over the country
§     Asking response questions (We've all been guilty of doing this with a big stack, right?)
New Instagram Ideas:
§     I find that quotes are very popular on instagram so you could upload picture quotes e.g

§     Personally I am big on memes as are many people browsing social media. You could always do ‘caption this’ or make your own with poker stars references. These along with quotes are definitely   something I would share with my friends.

Twitter
§     Cryptic Clue and other games
§     Links to tours and podcasts

New Twitter Ideas
§     For me as a non-poker player the page didn’t shout out to me and is very specific. A suggestion would be to incorporate some more outside references and share worthy content.
§     It’s all very exclusive at first glance to poker stars. Maybe incorporating games accessible to users who don’t know poker references
§     Posting memes with relevant hash tags

Facebook
§     Humor Apparent on first initial look (caption this style banter ‘When you’ve got aces in the big blind and everyone folds. Ugh’.)
§     Quotes using PokerStar players (could also use instagram example style quotes)
§     Games e.g “how many red cards are there” keeps people interacting and watching the page for result.
New Facebook Ideas:
§     Just like my instagram suggestions I think maybe incorporating different demographics of people outside of poker with competitions like
o   ‘Send us your poker tattoo [best one wins] competition’
o   ‘Send us your best poker face [best one wins] competition’
o   ‘Send us your card tower [best one wins] competition’
o   ‘Send us your poker art [best one wins] competition’
o   ‘Send us your best poker joker [best one wins] competition’
o   National day specific e.g Halloween  ‘‘Send us your poker costume [best one wins] competition’
§     Just like my instagram suggestions I think maybe incorporating more memes and humor are posts I am very likely to share
§     Although branding very specific to poker stars and its players I think a little more colour and content in posts suggests something a little more inviting to those out of poker stars to come into.
As a Facebook page it has great user interaction and is accessible to non poker players, nevertheless more shareable content with use of suggestions above may allow PokerStars posts to reach a wider audience. Including those who are non-poker players.

YouTube
§     Although there is already this kind of material a lot of it is further back into the video collection. I would suggest to make it more accessible to non-poker players, add in some newer ‘poker basics’ or softer PokerStar introductions?

New Ideas:

§     Documentary style interviews with players (possibly autobiographic)
§     Reviews on poker products?
§     Updated tutorials and tricks
§     User uploaded poker vlogs shared?

Twitch
I’m guessing with Twitch is very consistent to a niche market anyway and people using it are only looking for specific videos?

§     The PokerStars landing page header graphic is covered by title
§     Initial most recently uploaded on the previous broadcasts are all same graphics and you cannot see full title so seems as if you would have to go through all to see what is what?
§     I noticed some reference to charity work, for example in the Brazilian Neymar game. That seems as if it would reach out to a wider audience other than poker with relevant sharing?

Conclusion:

To conclude, I believe more user interactive competitions that aren’t necessarily aimed at just those with poker knowledge. You could use poker symbols as general knowledge questions etc. Instead of using general symbols to answer poker questions. I also believe trending categories like tattoos as such will bring in that kind of audience, as with card towers and other art based content. For example, users can showcase a piece of art that has themes of poker but then can get shared to another page that has a completely different market. So on and so forth with other types of trend. Finally, from a personal view and how I see my friends post. Memes, funny videos and quotes are very shared and the sources are from various niche markets as well. So it does work.
